All About Family Travel

Travel agent Laurie Baruch offers vacation tips for busy families.

by Lisa Kintish

June is here, and school is out! Summer is a great time to go on a family vacation. Whether loading up the car for a road trip to explore nearby treasures or getting on a plane to visit far-flung locales, preparation is everything.

Laurie Baruch, an independent contractor with Travel 15 for 45 years and a Mountain Lakes resident for 10, loves her job. “I never stop learning, and I do something different every day. Never boring,” she says.

As a frequent traveler, she notes, “My favorite destination is the last place I went. I went to Japan last year and to the Maldives and Dubai this year, and they were both amazing. But I love Italy, and I love Spain, and I love London...”

Baruch answers some questions to help us navigate our travel plans so that the trip is more fun and less stressful.

What deals can people book for July and August during the month of June?

Honestly, with the cost of gas and the cost of flights, there are no good deals this summer. The best option is to go somewhere off-season, like the Caribbean, Mexico, or Florida.

How far out should you book airline tickets?

This again is a hard question, but I say if you find decent fares, buy them. Fares are not likely to go down.

Is it true that there are better days and times of day to do this?

I know that they say Tuesday or Wednesday, but it really just depends on availability and how the flight is selling. If it gets sold out, then the rates don’t change, but if it is not selling, they can lower the rates. There is no real formula for that.

What are the destinations you recommend for families with small children, middle school-aged children, and teens?

All-inclusive resorts like Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic, Beaches, Grace Bay in Turks (just a few), and Nemocolin in Pennsylvania are great family options.

What are some under-the-radar places that families might want to consider?

Bermuda, a cruise, and a ranch out west are all great family vacations.

What mistakes do people make that cause the biggest travel disappointments?

Booking a less expensive hotel to save money, without really looking into what you get for that. Many people say the hotel does not matter, but I don’t agree. I think that booking less nights in a nicer hotel (and a lower room category) is better than booking a less expensive hotel with a better view...Most people do not sit and look at the view. The amenities are the most important, like a kid-friendly pool or enough places to eat.

Is there anything else you think people should know about booking a summer trip?

Don’t wait to book! Everyone is traveling despite the high costs. A family vacation is what your kids will remember more than any physical thing you can buy them. They don’t need another toy. Make memories with your kids on a great trip.
